11 November 2012: Poppy Day

SUNDAY
November 11th has many names associated with it: Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, Veterans Day, and Poppy Day. John McCrae's 1919 poem "In Flander Fields" helped memorialize the symbol of remembrance that is connected with the poppy. Poppies grow naturally in disturbed soil. Following WWI, the poppies thrived in the torn up battlefields where many fallen soldiers laid to rest.
Everyone one on TV is wearing a poppy.

The cross in front of the Abbey is now fill of small wooden crosses that have a poppy in the center.
The school band marches out in front of town hall and plays a few numbers while the crowd waits for the parade to arrive.
