Postal Museum. Bath had an important role in developing the British postal service. In 1720, Ralph Allen introduced "cross and bye posts" that meant mail no longer had to be sent to London before being distributed. John Palmer arranged the first mail coach run in 1784. Thomas Moore Musgrave was Bath Postmaster from 1833-1854 and is believed to be the first person to use the Penny Black stamp on May 2, 1840... four days before the official issue date.
