A 2004 book titled Driving Abroad was featured on the display shelf at the public library. I picked it up and flipped to the section for the US to see what the British advice was for driving in the States. The side caption explains, "Whilst distances are measured in miles, in conversation your journey will invariably be measured in driving hours." I had never fully conceptualized this observation, but it is true. Driving is not about distance but time.
