For the past several weeks, stores and restaurants have been building up excitement for Mothering Sunday by advertising products and dinners menus that celebrate mothers.
Unrelated to the American Mother's Day, in the UK, it falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The holiday evolved out of the centuries-old Christian tradition of returning to your home or "mother" parish once a year during Lent. Children who were domestic servants or in apprenticeships were given the day off to go home, which allowed them the opportunity to be reunited with their mother and it began to be referred to as Mothering Sunday. With the influence of the American holiday, Mothering Sunday became a day which to offer appreciation for one's mother.
